Taiwan Submarine Cables

Last December 26, the earthquake in Taiwan damaged submarine cables resulting in a slow Internet connection here in the Philippines. There is a figure of 18 cuts made, according to my reading. Shortly after repair went underway and after about five weeks the Internet is again picking up speed here. The cable repairs are expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The Philippines is second to India (and possibly China) in the business process outsourcing industry. A crippled Internet connection can result in downtime for the industry -- all because of an earthquake. This force of nature has the potential to destroy pride even in the most successful outsourcing destination.

What lies in the future of outsourcing in the Philippines and China? You may post your comments.
